Taking Fayetteville

General Sherman and his men reached the city of Fayetteville on March 11, 1865. By this time, most of the Confederate forces, under the control of Generals Wade Hampton and Joseph Wheeler, had left the city of Fayetteville. When leaving the town the Confederates burned a bridge that crossed the Cape Fear River to make it more difficult for the advancing Union troops to occupy the city of Fayetteville. Although no battles occurred in Fayetteville, its importance was clear because of property located in the city, like the old United States arsenal.  (Barrett 1956, 132-135)
