1856 Republican Presidential Campaign Poster
Title
1856 Republican Presidential Campaign Poster
Description
The Republican Party emerged in the United States following the controversial Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. While the Republican Party did not support radical abolitionism they did oppose the expansion of slavery westward into the territories. In the 1856 presidential election the Republican Party nominated John C. Fremont as their first ever candidate for the presidency. The Republican Party held a large following in the northern states and this campaign poster would have been posted throughout northern cities.
