Amnesty Petition of Thomas G. Walton, July 13, 1865
Description
Former Colonel of the Home Guard of the 8th Regiment, Thomas Walton, went to great lengths to explain his opposition to secession before the outbreak of hostilities. Walton explained that he had been an active member of the Whig Party, and had worked to "thwart" the secession conventions in 1861. He claimed that he was partially responsible for the convention being voted down at the beginning of 1861, and that he never voted for anyone who supported secession, nor was he ever a believer in secession. He explained that despite his misgivings, he served in the Confederate military and did so "dutifully and faithfully."
