Amnesty Petition of W.G. Lewis, June 20, 1865

Title

Amnesty Petition of W.G. Lewis, June 20, 1865

Description

Former Brigadier General in the Confederate Army, W.G. Lewis was excepted from pardon under the third provision. In his letter, Lewis stressed the fact that he primarily held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and that the rank of Brigadier General was a "temporary appoointment." Lewis argued that he did not feel that he should be excluded from Presidential amnesty because of this, and also put forth that he never maltreated prisoners and served faithfully in the Confederacy, meaning that he in turn would be a faithful United States citizen.
