"White Men to the Rescue," Raleigh News and Observer, September 6, 1898
Title
"White Men to the Rescue," Raleigh News and Observer, September 6, 1898
Description
In 1898 the Democratic Party embarked on a campaign to save North Carolina from the threats of "negro domination." From May until the election in November, the Democrats brutally campaigned on the rhetoric that only white men could effectively lead North Carolina and that the previous fusionist victories in 1894 and 1896 proved that African Americans made for incompetent and corrupt leaders. The Democrats attempted to win back white Populists by making their party out to be the white man's party.
