Description
One of the places that I visited frequently while growing up, the Charles B. Aycock Birthplace in Fremont, North Carolina, is a North Carolina Historic Site. I visited this site for multiple years while in elementary and middle school. The site is the location where former "education" Governor Charles Brantley Aycock grew up.
The site shows where the Aycock family raised their nine children during the Reconstruction era following the Civil War. It was a hard period of time for the Aycock family as they lived on a day-to-day basis on what crops they were able to produce. The site has multiple buildings that were on the Aycock farm and have been remodeled to accurately show how the family lived during the second half of the nineteenth century.
The site proved to be a very useful resource last year when I wrote about the life of Governor Aycock. The site provided me with lots of details about the home life as a young child that shaped his values that would later lead him to the gubernatorial nomination in 1900. It was a great experience to go back to the site as a more knowledgable individual who could understand the lifestyle that was lived out at the site during the late 1800s. The site is a great educational tool when attempting to describe a family living in the Reconstruction South, and luckily it is the site of a North Carolina governor.
