Activity 2: Adding Historical Context
In "activity one" you were asked to analyze the North Carolina 1900 voter registration laws without the aid of outside sources. Now answer the same questions again using other sources to aid in your interpretation of the voter registration laws. The other documents available include the United States Supreme Court Decision Plessy v. Ferguson, various newspaper articles and political cartoons published during the North Carolina White Supremacy Campaigns of 1898 and 1900, the voter registration card from Alamance county (1902), and the biographical sketches of Josephus Daniels (1862-1948) and George H. White (1852-1918). Remember to subject other primary sources to the same general questions provided in section 3 of the "How to Use Legal Documents as Primary Sources" tutorial. Also check out the tutorial "How Can You Use Political Cartoons as Primary Sources?" to get the most out of the political cartoons. Be sure do indicate in your answers which documents aided in your conclusions and why. Finally, reflect how the additional sources added to your understanding of the NC 1900 voter registration laws, using the questions below as a guide.
1. Which questions were you now able to answer using the additional sources?
2. Which answers did you add to or change based on the new information. How did your answers change?
3. Which questions require still further information before they can be adequately answered? What other sources might help you answer these questions?
