Description

In this collection of letters between WIlliam Dickson Carr and invidiuals in his family (mainly his mother), a personal account of a Confederate soldier in Western North Carolina during the Civil War is given. The letters range from early 1861-1865 just before Carr was tragically killed. Descriptions of the current state of the Confederate army, the death toll, and living conditions for Confederate soldiers are given. Carr has a voice of desperation in these letters as he constantly asks for food, and how his farm is coming along while he is away.

Mrs. L. Carr-Dear Mother,
As Mr. Bass is going to start home early in the morning, will write you a few lines and let you know who we are getting along. We are all tolerable well. Sam Evans was taken quite sick day before yesterday with pneumonia. Was sent to our regiment hospital. We have our camp pretty comfortable fixed up, but our water is not very good. As many as three regiments use water out of it. We have to work on the breastwork about every other day. Work one hour and rest one.
