Amnesty Petition of William McRae, July 28, 1865
Title
Amnesty Petition of William McRae, July 28, 1865
Description
William McRae was excluded from Presidential amnesty under the third provision due to his rank of Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. McRae insisted that he was loyal to the Union, and took no part in the political discussions leading to secession. He joined the Confederate Army out of a sense of duty as a private, and was promoted all the way to Brigadier General throughout the course of the war. McRae highlighted his meritorious service in the Confederate Army in an attempt to cast himself as a potential dutiful and industrious citizen if granted amnesty.
