Ledger of Thomas Ruffin, July, 1825
Title
Ledger of Thomas Ruffin, July, 1825
Description
This document provides evidence of Thomas Ruffin's involvement in the slave trade. The ledger lists the names, ages, and purchase price of several slaves that were purchased by Ruffin's partner Benjamin Chambers. Chambers did all of the hands-on work involved with the business while Ruffin was a silent partner that provided a larger portion of the capital. This item corresponds with the document "Sale of Negroes in Alabama" from 1825 (Item #603), as many of the slaves in that document had their purchase listed in this ledger.
