Description
This map of Chatham County, created in 1870 by Confederate Captain Nathan A. Ramsey, lays out the major neighborhoods, churches, crossroads, stores, schools, mills and landscape features such as rivers and creeks. It also shows the path of the railroad. Each of Chatham County's twelve townships are included: Albright, Hadley, Baldwin, Williams, Matthews, Hickory Mountain, Centre, New Hope, Bear Creek, Gulf, Oakland, and Cape Fear. Little had changed in Chatham County between the Civil War and 1870.
