"It is needless to remind our readers...," Fayetteville Observer, April, 18, 1861
Description
The Fayetteville Observer, a Unionist newspaper, ran an editorial outlining their past advocacy for the cause of the Union and regretted that the nation's had not been solved peacefully, as the paper thought was possible. The editors detailed how North Carolinians did not seek conflict and that the conflict was forced upon the state; however, the paper acknowledged the fact that there was no way that North Carolina could support Lincoln's demand for 75,000 troops, as it would have meant war against its Southern brothers. The paper called Lincoln's proclamation, "the last feather that breaks the camel's back."
