"A Word to Disunionists," Salisbury Carolina Watchman, February 26, 1861
Title
"A Word to Disunionists," Salisbury Carolina Watchman, February 26, 1861
Description
The Salisbury Carolina Watchman published this article before the February 28 Secession Convention vote in which it urged its Unionist readers to get out and vote against the Convention. In the piece the editor condemned those leaning toward voting for the convention and reminded them that when they head to the polls to vote for disunion that they should remember the fact that the government had never oppressed them. In fact, the government had a long history of protecting the interests of the people. The paper cautioned against letting fear, which it believed was fabricated by Secessionists, sway the peoples' vote toward secession.
