Description

This claim details the account of one Surry County resident whose property was taken during Stoneman's Raid in 1865. The claimant was a known Unionist on his way to meet the raiders when he was arrested by Federal Troops. He was then released after meeting with General Stoneman, but his horse, saddle, and bridle were confiscated. This claim give Cordel's account of the event, as well as the Southern Claim Commission's findings. The Commission determined that Cordel was loyal to the Union, and that a payment of $135.00 was to be made in reimbursement.
