Title
Letter of Judge Tourgee to Senator Abbott, May 24, 1870
Description
In this letter, Albion Tourgee, a civil rights activist and representative to the Constitutional Convention, wrote to Joseph Abbott (pictured), a Republican senator, about the high Klu Klux Klan activity within Alamance and Caswell counties in the highly turbulent time following the Civil War. After he described the violence done to many African Americans in these counties, he went on to explain how problems in government have not helped the situation. Tourgee finished with a summary of his ideas of how government action can work to eliminate the hatred and brutality of the KKK in Alamance and Caswell counties.
