Laura McDaniel and M. Joyner Kerr wrote the the Governor on March 4, 1865 from Fayetteville, North Carolina. They informed the Governor that Fayetteville was threatened by Union troops and the town could not defend itself. She requested troops be sent to the city. Fayetteville was captured by Union troops a week after this letter was sent, on March 11.

To his excellency out most worthy Governor
Z. B. Vance
[to] [the] [amdenesided] to [end] the following heartfelt petition. whereas [anoter] son and the place of our [eyonrm] Fayetteville is threatened by the enemy is at present without effective men of defense are no [enheart] our Governor to look with compassion upon his [time] and loyal subjects and send us an able and [salaitt] body of men to protect us! I know his Excellency is over whelmed with [course] of state we would like to assist by any means within our power and we know of a boy and men who are made of youth [shterm] material required of soldiers and would most respectfully enlist . The [leteap] of the Cassell Home Guard commanded by Capt Willis H Pattillo are the best qualification of any other company in the state far [senh] an important [hinst]
