"Presidential Election," Carolina Watchman, November 13, 1860
Title
"Presidential Election," Carolina Watchman, November 13, 1860
Description
In its editorial on the 1860 Presidential election the Carolina Watchman, a Unionist newspaper from Salisbury, N.C. reports on the election of Abraham Lincoln as president. Although the paper is unhappy with the election of Lincoln and defeat of their candidate, Bell, the paper stresses that the Democratic party has picked up seats in both houses of Congress, including the Democrats making gains in Northern states. The editor stresses that even if he wanted to, Lincoln could do no harm to the South with a majority in Congress that would be opposed to any changes he might wish to make.
