Claim of John Tilley- Southern Claims Commission, December 13, 1878

This claim details the account of one Surry County resident whose property was taken during Stoneman's Raid in 1865. The claimant was a said to be a Unionist, and his claim actually lists that he was once threatened by the Confederate Home Guard. When he came in contact with General Stoneman's troops, his horse, saddle, and bridle were confiscated. This claim give Cordel's account of the event, as well as the Southern Claim Commission's findings. The Commission determined that Cordel was loyal to the Union, and that a payment of $112.00 was to be made in reimbursement.
