Conclusion

The Union capture of Fort Fisher and the resulting isolation of the Confederacy created a serious shortage of supplies for the Confederate armies. The lack of provisions and munitions served to weaken the Confederate war effort to such an extent that Robert E. Lee was forced to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia to the Union to bring the Civil War to a close.
